How many bricks are in a square foot of wall?
For standard modular brick (7.625" x 2.25" face) laid with typical 3/8" mortar joints, it works out to about 6.75 bricks per square foot -- the figure this calculator uses. Different brick sizes or joint widths will change that number.
How much mortar do I need per 100 bricks?
The Brick Industry Association (Technical Note 10) puts the net mortar in 3/8-inch joints at roughly 7 to 9 cubic feet per 1,000 modular bricks, under 1 cubic foot per 100. Bag labels are more generous: Quikrete rates an 80 lb bag of mortar mix, about 0.75 cubic feet mixed, at around 37 bricks, which is closer to 2 cubic feet per 100 once bedding, dropped mortar and waste are counted. This calculator uses 1.5 cubic feet per 100 bricks, above the BIA net figure and below the bag-label rule, so a mason's order comes out with a little spare rather than a lot.
Does this work for a double-wythe (two-layer) wall?
This calculator estimates a single-wythe (one brick thick) wall face. For a double-wythe wall, run the calculator once, then double the brick and mortar totals -- the two layers don't share bricks.
