What's a roofing "square"?
One square equals 100 square feet of actual roof surface -- the standard unit roofers and shingle manufacturers use for pricing and coverage, instead of raw square footage.
Why does the calculator ask for roof surface area, not the house's footprint?
A pitched roof's real surface area is larger than the building's floor plan underneath it -- the steeper the pitch, the bigger the difference. If you only have the footprint, you'll need to apply a pitch multiplier first (see a roof pitch reference chart) before using this calculator.
How many bundles are in a square?
3 bundles per square is the standard packaging for most 3-tab and architectural shingles. Some premium, heavier, or specialty shingle products are packaged differently -- check your specific product's coverage rating if you're using something other than a standard shingle.
