Frequently Asked Questions
How deep should the base be under pavers?
A 4-6 inch compacted gravel base plus a 1 inch sand setting bed is the standard recommendation across most paver manufacturers' installation guides -- heavier traffic (a driveway vs. a garden path) generally calls for the deeper end of that range.
Why does the paver count include a waste factor?
Cuts around edges and curves, breakage during handling, and pattern layouts (like herringbone) that don't tile perfectly all use more pavers than the raw area math suggests. 10% is standard trade advice for most layouts; simple grid patterns can sometimes get away with less.
Can I use this for irregular-shaped patios?
This calculator assumes a rectangular area. For an irregular shape, break it into rectangular sections, run each through the calculator separately, and add the results together.
